Sports and Walks

We have an abundance of opportunities for Mountain Biking and traffic-free biking in the area.

In the nearby Brechfa Forest, four way marked trails cater for all abilities from fun routes of 8mls and 10mls through a sport route of 5mls to an expert route of 9mls.

At Llyn Llech Owain near Llandeilo there is a short easy family ride around the park, with a tougher mountain bike course at the NE end of the park.

The Celtic Trail, the National Cycle Network Route that will run from Fishguard to Chepstow, has traffic-free sections at the Llanelli Millenium Coastal Park and east and west of Pembrey Country Park near Kidwelly. There is also a waymarked biking circuit around the 500acre park.

Llanwrtyd Wells has for many years staged the Man V Horse Mountain Bike Race and provides many biking options using forest roads, moorland bridleways and the steep lanes around Llyn Brianne Reservoir.

The Afon Argoed Countryside Centre, near Neath, offers both family rides and waymarked mountain biking.

Cwmcarn Forest, near Newport, has developed a new mountain bike route.

There are many wonderful Walks around the neighbourhood.

The local footpaths outlined in ‘Close to Home’ include the 7ml walk to Abergorlech, reached by a footpath joining the ancient drove-way above Cwmcochied. Also reaching Talley along the drove-way in the opposite direction with its community-owned woodland walks, Abbey and lakes.
There is an extensive rights of way network between Cwmdu and Salem with 3 promoted routes between 3mls and 6mls long.

Dolaucothi. There are walks into the Pumpsaint and the historic Caio area, over the National Trusts’ estate.

There are walks of varying length around the village of Llanfynydd, dating from the Age of the Saints, where the 10th century Llech Eiudion cross once stood, now exhibited in the National Museum of Wales, Cardiff.

Pembrey Mountain, has an extensive network of promoted routes with wonderful views.

Pendine to Amroth, 5ml walk on the Carmarthen Bay Coast Path.

Gower cliff paths, also 3ml crescent of Rhossili Beach.

Llyn Y Fan Fach, Carmarthen Fans, Brecon Beacons, 3ml (2hr) walk up to the glorious 20,000yr old lake of the ancient myth of the ‘Lady of the Lake’ from whom the famous Physicians of Myddfai - and Modern Medicine - are said to be descended. From here more demanding walks along the Bannau Sir Gaer Ridge, 11mls (5-6hrs)
