“Where you are is the centre of the world” – Celtic proverb
.
The tiny village of Cwmdu with its National Trust owned shop, Post Office and pub is about a mile away by road – less if you follow the footpath. The shop and Post Office is open 9.30am to 1.30pm Tuesday to Saturday. The community-run Cwmdu Inn, belongs to the National Trust and is open on Wednesday to Saturday evenings. On Saturday evening locally sourced food, prepared by villagers, is served in the restaurant. This is a popular event & it’s wise to phone 01558 685088 to book a table.
There are various village events arranged by “Cwmdeithas Cwmdu” (Cwmdu community group) throughout the year, ranging from the Summer Fete held in July to a Folk night in the Cwmdu Inn on the first Friday of each month (excluding July and August). The Vintage & Veteran club meets monthly to hear talks on agricultural machinery of the past. News of events is usually pinned to the shop or pub door – we will be pleased to let you know more.
There is a network of footpaths connecting our farm with local villages. The footpath through the farm itself leads to Cwmdu and Talley and its imposing Abbey ruins dating from the 12th century, lakes and woods. The churchyard next to the Abbey is the last resting place of Dafydd ap Gwilym the eminent 14th century poet. A fork in the path takes you up onto Mynydd Cynros with far reaching views over mid Wales. There is newly opened right of access to land on the mountain via the Drove road which was part of the pilgrims route connecting the ancient religious settlements of Talley, Abergorlech and Llanfynydd.
Our local town Llandeilo perches above the River Tywi, which is renowned for its salmon fishing & the National Trust locates its regional offices in this picturesque settlement which adjoins the Trust-owned Dinefwr estate (see “days out”). There are three art galleries, delis, good pubs & a shop selling only chocolate!
There is a strong culture of good food in Carmarthenshire. Farmers Markets & small retailers offer delicious locally grown ingredients & there are some excellent restaurants in the area. Only 3 miles from Cwmcochied is the renowned Angel Inn at Salem run by former Welsh Chef of the Year, Rod Petersen, which receives rave reviews from all our guests.
